The 3-litre engine of the Ferrari 312P was a direct offshoot of the 12-cylinder Type 312 engine, a Formula 1 race car, which featured four valves per combustion chamber.

Despite the minor modifications, it remained a high-bred Formula 1 engine, made for sprint races rather than a 24-hour endurance race that demanded high-performance stability and tolerance. All being considered, however, Franco Rocchi did a great job. It is a sleek and beautifully-integrated 12-cylinder engine with a 60° cylinder angle. CMC has presented the engine and transmission in a dust-proof case.
